Mahalia is originally from Wisconsin, where she grew up with nine younger siblings and learned how important it is for young kids to have excellent role models. She first joined the Y.O.U. team as a work-study student from Northwestern University in 2013 and continued as an Inspire Fellow for the summer of 2016. She graduated in June 2017 with a degree in creative writing and decided to pursue her passion for working with youth as a Y.O.U.th Serve Member.
Mahalia is an avid reader and writer and believes that writing can be an important tool for self-understanding and identity development. She loves building meaningful one-on-one relationships with youth, so she hopes to use creative writing activities to encourage youth to express themselves and develop their own identities. In her free time, Mahalia likes to spend time with her family and friends, check out new restaurants, and play board games. She almost never cheats at Scrabble.
