YOU's 2016 Summer Showcase on Friday at the Levy Senior Center in Evanston drew more than 600 people, said Seth Green of Evanston, executive director of Youth & Opportunity United (YOU) of Evanston.

"We're awed by the turnout and by the leadership of the youth here," Green said. "It's absolutely amazing to see our young people embrace their learning journeys with such seriousness and enthusiasm."

The showcase was an opportunity for YOU summer participants to share their talents with families and the community.

YOU's eight-week, daily summer learning programs included more than 500 youth participants in Skokie and Evanston who explored arts and culture, science and technology plus sports and recreation.

"Activities focused on exploration, leadership and aspiration-building, giving young people the tools to delve deeper into their learning and to explore new interests and career paths," Green said.

Nyrie Jones, 9, an Evanston fifth-grader, danced on the showcase's stage with peers.

"I'm so proud of her; she was so good!" said Arkita Jones, Nyrie's stepmother and a 2001 Evanston Township High School graduate. "I think YOU is great and helps so many kids."
