TENZIN NORSANG: phayul.com & Lateng Online

After completing my studies, I joined an Indian startup company where I worked as a programmer. While working there, I came to realise the need of a Tibetan website that would bring together Tibetans scattered all over the world and, Phayul.com came into its being. It provides a platform to share and exchange ideas and thoughts on our struggle as well as to disseminate information and news about Tibet to the Tibetan communities all over the world. That was in 2001 and since then phayul has come a long way, struggling hard to work within the strict financial constraints.

In 2003, I left the Indian company to give my full time to phayul. Today, phayul stands as one of the most reliable and fastest news source in the exile community, with an average of more then 4000 unique visitors per day and more then 1.5 million page views per month. In the revenue front, until 2004, we have been going into deficit, but now it has become self-sufficient and I hope to make it a self-reliant entity as soon as possible.

Where we stand now, the credit goes to lots of people: my family for moral and financial support and especially my true and efficient friends who have the edge in journalism, Kelsang Rinchen, Tsering Tsomo and Tashi Dhondup. They gave me their time and expertise without charging any fees, their help came when I needed it most.

I started a web solutions company called Lateng Online while working for phayul. At the right time, I had the opportunity of meeting YOTA in September 2003 and also had a rare opportunity of meeting Prince Charles in October of that year as one of YOTA’s first entrepreneurs. In March 2005, I received financial assistance from them for my web solutions company. I have now been able to start up an office; until recently, I had been working from my one-room apartment which operated as my office-cum-bedroom.

Today I feel proud to have been able to start the first complete Tibetan Web Solutions Company in exile, Lateng Online. Our services include website development/ designing/ maintenance, hosting, domain name registration etc.

Now I feel optimistic about my dreams being gradually realised. And the joy and the satisfaction is something inexpressible in words. I remain indebted to all my family and friends who have played any role in materialising everything. I owe my special gratitude to YOTA for its assistance for which I feel YOTA a very part of my dreams.
