Polytechnic Back
Unlike in earlier days, most of the students today pursue professional courses. Professional courses don’t only include doctors degrees, MBAs, engineer trainings which seem to be the big craze in India at the moment. Specialisation is the key to success so don’t think that going for a professional or vocational course is any worse than going for a BA or BSc. In fact, you are more likely to get a good and well paid job after a specialised course than after a general BA or BSc where everybody then ends up competing for the same jobs with the same qualifications and no specific experience.

Also if you have had to leave school for whatever reason, polytechnics are much more flexible than colleges; many professional or vocational courses can be attended even without a Class 12 degree. (Computer, secretary and architecture diplomas do need you to have completed Class 12).

Polytechnic institutes provide a number of vocational courses which are of short duration - usually a few months or a year – a few courses are longer, up to two or three years (like Food Crafts for example). You can train as a computer software or hardware technician, as a tailor, a house keeper, plumber, mechanic, beautician, front desk persons etc. The skills needed in these vocational courses vary from course to course. The basic requirement is your own keen interest and a zeal to excel in the particular area you have chosen.

After completing professional or vocational courses, most of the students find work as professionals in their respective fields. Some have even started their own beauty parlours, tailoring shops after a few years of working under a qualified professional.

Apart from the number of Indian institutes based in different cities, TCV (Tibetan Children’s Village) and YES (Youth Employment Program) an initiative of the Home Department provide vocational courses in numerous fields.
