McGaw YMCA and Y.O.U. Invite All Girls to "Take Over"

Occurred: March 17, 2017 4:00pm – 6:00pm

All middle school-aged students who identify as female are invited to take over the McGaw YMCA’s MetaMedia digital media lab! On March 17, from 4 to 6 p.m., “Girls Take Over” will provide STEM-related activities free of charge.

Girls Take Over is sponsored by the McGaw YMCA, Youth and Opportunity United (Y.O.U.) and the Evanston Public Library. The Chicago Foundation For Women’s North Shore Giving Circle, which addresses the needs of women and girls in the northern suburbs, is generously funding the event.

Girl-lead tinkering stations will provide opportunities to get creative through radical fasion and a maker photo booth. Girls can also practice their skills and learn something new at the gaming and coding booths.

“’Girls Take Over’” is all about creating space for girls at a critical time in their development and helping them explore their potential through science, technology, and the arts,” said Sarita Smith, McGaw YMCA Director for Youth Enrichment. “And it’s an opportunity to strengthen our partnership with Y.O.U. and expand our collaboration with the Evanston Public Library.”

Middle school ‘makers’ from MetaMedia will attend the event, as well as Y.O.U. participants, but all girls are welcome. Just bring your curiosity and creativity! Girls Take Over will be held at the McGaw YMCA, 1000 Grove Street.
