Y.O.U. Supports District 65

Published: July 21, 2021

Y.O.U is a proud partner of District 65 and stands in full support of the District, Dr. Horton, and the Board of Education. We support their anti-racist efforts towards greater equity and stand in strong opposition to the recent lawsuit filed by a District 65 drama teacher against Dr. Horton and the District. We know that our school district is working towards an education system that works for every student. From our work in District 65 schools each day, we also know first-hand the positive change that is possible when educators and a school district commit to racial justice and equity.

Y.O.U. provides out-of-school-time programming at seven District 65 schools. We aim to combat structural and systemic inequities in our community, centering Black and Brown youth who have been historically marginalized and underrepresented.

Youth in Evanston and Skokie have vastly varied access to resources, environments, and opportunities for success. Y.O.U. knows that this disproportionate access is the result of systemic racism and other forms of oppression. We see these inequities play out in our community in the educational opportunity gap, wealth gap, housing insecurity, and the lack of safe spaces both in school and out of school for youth of color to be their full selves. Y.O.U. works to counter these inequities, but it will take a truly collective effort to achieve full justice for our Black and Brown youth. This work cannot be done in isolation.

We stand with District 65 in support of anti-racist efforts, equity, and racial justice. Y.O.U. is proud to collaborate with District 65 as we work towards a world for our youth as they want it to be.
