Young people mark Martin Luther King Day

Youth & Opportunity United held its 13th annual Diverse Communities United event Monday at Evanston Township High School to showcase performances and artwork by participants in Y.O.U.’s 11 school-based program sites.
Performances celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by emphasizing peace, diversity, unity, leadership and service. Over 900 people attended the showcase and gallery event.
Students from third to 12th grade performed original songs, dance, poetry and skits related to the theme “Because of Them, I Can” to honor the work of leaders like Dr. King, and celebrate how youth can be role models and advocates in their own communities.
DCU is student organized, and was emceed by five ETHS seniors; Brianna Williams, Devea Williams, Mina Jue, Madison Corins, and Nia Williams. The students worked for close to a year to produce and plan the event with support from Y.O.U. staff and community partners.
